Thoughts for the day

Oh dear, Borlaug's dead.

Expression to use in a poem or short story - 'plastic spastic'

Thinking: if the government is participating in over 50% of the economy, do we imagine that we will create a large 'leech' economy, with companies solely created to extract cash from the government?

It seems to me that there are sectors of the economy that are like this already. Like the social housing sector. I approve of the principle of social housing, especially on an island with a housing market as crazy as ours but in its purest form - government grants to housing associations to build houses which are then rented to people who pay their rents with housing benefit - it just all seems a leeetle inefficient (then again, without the inefficiency we would have more unemployment!

At a quango briefing I recently attended, many of the companies looking to apply for government grants had no domain expertise in the relevant areas under discussion, and were simply two-three person consultancies that lived off government grants, writing reports of no consequence whatsoever. Unfortunately, that trend appears to be on the increase. The money isn't getting to the right people.
